I’m a Survivor, You’re A Survivor … Your Feet Are Also Survivors

It’s a known fact that your feet are the hardest working and most neglected area of your body.  The foot itself is a sophisticated piece of architecture.  It is literally your body’s support and foundation, yet more often than not, your feet are only seen as an accessory to polished toenails in a colorful pair of sandals.

Your feet deserve and need more than just cosmetic beautification.  Your feet actually have two components to them, the physical foot and the metaphysical foot.

Let’s take a look at the role each component plays:

The Physical Foot

Have you ever asked yourself why your feet hurt at the end of a long day?  For one thing your feet are bony.  Your feet contain 52 bones, many of which are prone to breakage.  The bones in your feet make up 25% of the total number of bones in your entire body.

Each of your feet are supported by 33 joints, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles and tendons.  Your feet are extremely sensitive and receptive to touch because of the nerve endings present.

Did you know that your feet are more sensitive than your hands?  Because of this a lot can go wrong.  As you mature your feet are prone to degeneration and simple wear and tear from the passage of time itself, can cause pain in your feet.

There’s a condition often referred to as policemen’s heel, it’s common among people who stand on their feet for long periods of time.  It’s also common among maturing weekend warriors that play tennis and run marathons.

But the biggest trauma caused to your feet are brought on by the very shoes you wear.  Sorry, but your narrow pointed toe and high heel Louboutins and Jimmy Choos can crush your toes, create corns and bunions and cause painful long term muscle shortening.

And don’t forget your flip flops that offer no support or your sheepskin boots that just might invite fungus if your feet frequently sweat during the day.  There are other issues that might threaten the well being of your feet but when serious foot issues occur a podiatrist should become your best friend.

The Metaphysical Foot

In the modern world most seem to think of feet as dirty and less than noble but in the ancient world foot-bathing and foot-anointing are sacred elements.

In ancient healing systems, including ayurveda, understanding your feet is considered essential to understanding and treating your overall health. Here is where reflexology comes into play.

In reflexology the concept is, that every zone in your feet and your hands correspond to an internal organ in your body.

The soles of your feet are like a complex map.  By applying pressure to appropriate areas along a meridian, inner imbalances may be corrected thereby resulting in improved health.

With your feet  …

Not everyone believes in reflexology or that it is a viable source for balance and relief of pain.

But no one can deny that a foot massage brings a few ooo, ahhh moments to sore tired feet.

Still standing? That means your feet have survived the onslaught of wear and tear that you’ve given them throughout their years of service to you.
