To winterize your beautiful black skin when the temperature is 32 degrees is a must. Even more so when the temperature begins to fall below freezing.
When I lived in the northeast, I adapted to the weather and its frigid conditions. One of the things that really had to be protected during the winter months was my face.
Ever turn a corner in NYC and have the wind slice and dice your face? Or better yet, end up in a Chicago snow storm in October? By the time I got back to NYC, I thought I’d entered a heatwave.
Your skin encounters all kind of weather conditions. Winter is the most challenging. Not only do the elements of nature come after you, so do the dry heat conditions in your living and work space.
Keeping your skin moisturized is key.
Most of you know that I take a whole body approach to black skin care. Which means, I suggest an internal and external approach to getting great results.
For external use, look for products that have hyaluronic acid as an ingredient. It’s an ingredient that locks in moisture and hydrates your skin’s layers. You can also look for serums and face oils with jojoba oil. By far, jojoba oil is the best carrier oil for skin care.
Serums nourish and nurture your skin be it normal, dry or combination. Facial oils are great moisturizers for dry skin. These are all intended for your skin from the neck up.
Some of you think more is better when it comes to product use. For winter skin care, you can add a bit more. However, for summer skin, revert back to minimal product use.
When it comes to your body, from the base of your neck down, a combination of shea, cocoa and mango butters are good. Together, these butters can work wonders for your skin.
Exfoliation is extremely important as well, especially for your body. Because it’s not seen for a few months, you take it as a time to slack off from its care.
Please don’t.
It’s important to remove dead skin cells. Why? Because they end up coming off from the friction of your clothes rubbing against your skin. This process has you looking as though you’re shedding.
Your socks or tights might have white or gray flakes. These are dead skin cells. They can also create added layers of skin on your feet creating a crust that will attach itself. This dead skin becomes harder to remove when not attended to with an exfoliation treatment.
For an internal approach, you’ll want to drink half your body weight in water. Why? Because your organs, cells and the rest of your internals need the moisture to provide and reflect beautiful skin back to you. Internal moisturization is like having a reflection of the health of your insides showing its beauty outwardly.
Of course there are your green foods to add chlorophyll to your blood. Don’t skimp on green foods in any season.
A basic skin care regimen is still important. Cleanse, tone and moisturize. Your moisturizer does you no good, it you’re applying it to unclean and cared for skin.
Those mask we’re now wearing might actually help with you skin care regimen this winter season. They’ll add an extra layer for protection from the elements. You still have to wash them and it’s best to change them daily.
That’s it for this week. As always …
