Does your Esthetician always know best?  If she/he does, do they always practice what’s best for Black skin?  Hubby and I had dinner and a movie last night and in this particular movie one of the characters was an Esthetician.

Wow!  Now if you knew better you would have seen all kind of wrong practice as far as the Estheticians job is concerned.  She never questioned the clients, she never cleansed their face in order to remove dirt from it.  She did wash her hands, I’ll give her that much.  But one of the most gross errors, was that of proceeding to extract blackheads from a young girls face without washing it or steaming it to soften her skin for easy removal of the blackheads.

What do you think happened? The young girl looked like she’d been beaten in her face.  Now this was a young caucasion girl.  What do you think would happen to your skin as an African American had she followed the same practices with you?

Your skin would have been traumatized and you would have had scarring for a long time if not forever. So, here are a few tips to look for when seeking an Esthetician to Care for African American Skin:

  • How much experience does the Esthetician have working on African American Skin?
  • What type of products do they use?  If the products are primarily alcohol based, you’re in trouble, to much alcohol in a product will dry your skin out.
  • Did the Esthetician  interview you to find out about your skin and it’s condition, what medications you might be taking or whether or not this was even your first facial?
  • What does their work station look like?  Does the area look and smell clean?
  • Is the Esthetician open to you asking them questions?

These are just a few things to consider when looking for an Esthetician to take care of your skin.  Don’t put your face in the hands of just any ole person, make sure they are familiar with your skin or has experience working with ethnic skin.
