Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is the prince of vitamins. But Vitamin C is also a great antioxidant. Since Vitamin C is water-soluble, it is able to destroy free radicals before they can reach your cellular membrane.
Vitamin C along with Vitamin A, can reverse skin changes. Consider that the signs of aging skin are the ones associated with the loss of collagen production. The use of Vitamin C is a major line of defense in the treatment of aging skin. I don’t know about you, but I used to see my grandmother take an orange peel and rub her face with it. Now I understand why, she worked closely with mother nature, modern science is playing catch up.
Vitamin C can block tyrosinase, which is critical in the formation of melanin. What does this mean, well, when you get a dark spot , if you use a Vitamin C based product on you face, it can possibly reduce the pigmented spot in 4 to 12 weeks. Dark spots can be the result of picking a pimple or squeezing a black head but dark spots also occur on Black Skin as we age.
Skin discoloration for some African Americans, especially on our face, becomes more prominent as we age. This is when we start looking for skin lighteners and brighteners, not realizing that for some of us, these products can create more of a problem for our skin. If you choose to use this type of product, try to fine one that has natural lighteners and brighteners, such as vitamin C, bearberry or licorice.
So when you take your Vitamin C, know that your can use it to feed your skin both internally and externally.
