When it comes to the dazzling array of beauty and skin care products on the shelves of the retailers, it can be a daunting task to choose one – and when you do finally make a choice, how do you know it’s the right one for you? Well, that’s what experts are for, and I am an expert.

For years I have been researching and testing the best skin care products specific to African American skin, so let’s go shopping together you and I, and let’s see what we can find to create the right combination of products which are best for your skin.

When we find ourselves looking down the aisle of skincare products which are NOT skin color specific, let’s just pass them by because they are likely to contain ingredients which can harm your skin – even your whole body – things like harsh fragrances, artificial dyes and chemicals.

“But” I hear you ask “how can just putting cream on my face be harmful to my body?” Let me remind you that your skin is the largest organ you have, and everything that goes ON the skin goes IN the skin. Your skin absorbs the chemicals in the artificial product and then your body has to find a way to process or eliminate it.

So let’s head for the products marked “Natural Ingredients” and see what we can find there. Here’s one that says it contains “natural” ingredients, and that may be partially so, but it may still have an artificial scent, dye or some other chemical. No, the products we are looking for need to be clearly marked “ALL natural ingredients”.

Here’s one that is destined for our shopping cart – it contains Shea Butter as a base ingredient, a natural botanical extract that utilizes fatty acid to heal the skin. If your skin has any issues with dryness, then Shea butter is absolutely the way to go because it has nutritive properties for many skin conditions. Shea butter is often used to heal, and you can use it as a daily moisturizer.

It also helps overcome sun damage by locking in moisture for better restoration. Shea butter actually gives your skin a non-greasy feel because it quickly and naturally absorbs into your skin. It gives you that much needed moisture for your skin without the harmful properties of many of the general purpose, one size fits all moisturizers.

Many African American women and men also use Shea butter to soften the tough skin on their feet or palms, especially after exposure to the elements for any period of time. Other than facial care, you can use Shea butter regularly on your hands and feet to keep them soft and healthy. If you have any type of scarring on your face or your body, then using a Shea butter based moisturizer will start the cells in the direction of healing and regeneration.

Just remember that simple, natural ingredients should be what you look for, and then hone in on products made specifically for your African American skin.  It’s been a pleasure shopping with you, and I hope I was able to lead you to the aisle that sells the best skin care for you.
