Tell me about your skin beautiful black woman. Did you know that your skin tells stories about how you live? It will speak of the climate you live in, what you eat and how many hours of sleep you’ve gotten the night before. It’s amazing what your face and body will reveal to the world.
The beauty in all of this is that, what ever the story, your skin can miraculously regenerate itself and improve in tone and texture in two to three weeks.
A lot of you will tell me that you have bad skin. What does that mean? Bad how? You respond with it’s too dark, I have too many spots, it’s too oily. Do you speak with such disdain about the other organs of your body?
You’ve heard it over and over again that your skin is the largest organ of your body. It actually holds you together. It’s your beautiful and natural armor. It communicates what’s going on inside your body and it’s your unique presentation to the world.
In order to appreciate your beauty, it might be a good idea to define what beauty is to you and not allow others to define beauty for you. We follow the habits of others by applying makeup at a very early age. It might be a good idea to understand what it means to have a good skin care regimen and how proper nutrition is great for skin health.
A good skin care regimen consist of Cleansing, Toning, Exfoliating and Moisturizing, I can’t stress this enough.
Cleansing done twice a day will give your skin a fresh morning glow and remove any dirt and debris from the smog filled environments you’ve worked or traveled in all day long. While some of you have found oil based cleansing to work, the basics of a cream cleanser is still a good choice. Cream based cleansers will work for all skin types.
Exfoliating will remove dead skin cell buildup. Dead skin cells will actually cause your skin to look dull, ashy and gray, not to mention the appearance of uneven skin tones. A cream based product with jojoba wax beads or a rice powder mask will gently remove the dead skin cells.
Toning put simply, helps bring your skins pH level back into place. Some say that toners should serve as a second cleansing, this is not true. If you’re still seeing dirt on your skin as you use your toner, you’ve not cleaned it thoroughly.
Moisturizers act as nourishers as well as some serums. To keep bacteria out of your moisturizers use a spatula or wooden stick to extract it from the container, especially if it’s housed in a jar. If it’s housed in an airless pump, one or two squirts will suffice. Spread evenly over your neck and face.
When we say tell me about your skin, the rest of your body is in need of attention as well. Cleansing products that will do the job without stripping it of its natural oils work wonders. A good body butter or body oil will have your skin feeling soft as a baby’s bottom. Body massages and spa visits are a great add-on for a complete full body skin care experience.
The next time someone says to you, “tell me about your skin”, it’ll be because they want to know how you got it looking so soft and beautiful.
That’s it for this week. As always …
