How have I stressed thee? Let me count the ways!  This is a question you ask your skin when you begin to see pimples, blackheads and breakouts that you can’t explain.

And telling yourself to chill out is easier said than done.  But what if you could find that special place of relaxation and calm your nerves and quiet your mind?  When your bills are mounting or your job has been outsourced abroad, how do you calm yourself and avoid the stress?

Stress shows up in so many ways and your beautiful black skin and hair are pivotal points in which you see its wrath.  For some of you it’s dry, dull, ashy skin and for others your hair sheds as if you were a long hair cat.

Your stress level is causing a reaction from within and your skin and hair are telling you that you’ve lost your internal balance.

How do you find and maintain your balance from within? The next few step will get you started.  Some would tell you to simply remove what’s causing you stress but if this seems too simple, work through it with the following suggestions:

  • Find a way to exercise and release some of the pent up emotions.  Walking, swimming, dancing or tai chi will help to calm the emotional fire being caused by stress.
  • Be very conscious of what you eat.  Foods can cause great trauma to your system, like mood swings, fatigue and dehydration.  One food in particular will have you challenged with all three of these conditions:  Sugar!
  • Let’s not leave out therapy.   Find someone you can trust to talk through your particular challenges with and your best friend may not be the best person for this “talk”.
  • Get a “restful” nights sleep.  There’s sleep and there’s a night’s sleep where you’ve actually rested.  When you’re tired and don’t sleep well, your skin suffers.  When you sleep your skin is replenishing itself and if this sleep isn’t allowing you to rest, neither is your skin.
  • As you transition from one season into the next, be mindful of the weather. It can also bring a certain level of stress to your skin.  Temperature changes can affect your skin and your hair, so your moisturizer might have to change in order to accommodate the cool temps rolling in.  Your shampoo and conditioner might need to change to handle the dryness brought on by excessive heat in building and wool caps, that shouldn’t be on your head.

Stress and your beautiful black skin are Not a winning combination, so  make it a daily habit to eliminate it .
