Ready for an awesome new year? Let’s make a toast with a glass of sparkling cider. Some of you might say: anything is better than the year just pasted. How will you make it better for yourself and your family? COVID is still here and appears to be staying around for the rest of the year.
How will you maintain your sanity? Especially if another “Shelter In Place” is issued.
It’s the perfect time to put your exercise regimen in place. Typically, we approach the beginning of a new year with how we’re going to lose the few or not so few pounds gained over the holiday.
This year, exercise takes on a whole new meaning. Exercise this year is more about maintaining sanity. Staying physically fit, so your body stays strong.
Not only will you be exercising to rid the handles and muffin tops, you’ll be doing it to strengthen your heart. Also to tighten muscle strength around your joints and of course to build stamina and endurance.
Your respiratory system needs to be strong enough to ward off germs and viruses from germs. Exercise can help with that.
COVID has made you rethink what you eat and not always by choice. Out of pure necessity, you’ve had to make better food choices to keep your body strong.
For a lot of you, healthy meals became the norm… again.
There was a time when you would sit down and have dinner with your family. Then everyone developed a “busy schedule” and meals became eat on the run. Let’s not forget, eating on the run meant not so healthy meals.
Now your meal choices are more deliberate because your health has taken a front row seat in your life. You’re working from home, therefore, you factor in time to actually prepare your meals.
You shop with a list that includes fresh vegetables and less meat. You’ve even changed the way you snack… right?!
As you watch the news and see the treatment of black folk, it should be obvious to you that your health is your responsibility.
Let this be the year you pull together as a community and grow your food. If you don’t have time to till the soil, contribute with packs of seeds or gardening tools to those who do.
The better you eat, the better you’ll feel.
There’s still time to prepare if you aren’t. Let’s spend more time doing what we can to change things. Make sure you step outside to get some fresh air and sunshine.
Walk your block, whether you live in the city or suburbs. If there’s a tree nearby, hug it, touch it, stand under it. You’ll be surprised at what Mother Nature provides for you just by standing under or hugging a tree.
That’s it for this week. Have a Great New Year! As always …
