Black men care just as much about their skin as their queens. They also understand that as men of color, there are special needs for their Black skin. But we also know, they don’t want all the fuss but want results. So, what might be the skin care questions they’re asking themselves?
As a Black man, can I do anything about dark spots and blemishes on my face?
Dark spots or hyper-pigmentation, can result from either from acne or from shaving (bumps).
However, it’s best to consult with a dermatologist to determine the cause before buying a treatment product – there are hundreds of over-the-counter products. Ultimately, if you want to fade or remove hyper-pigmentation, steer clear of hydroquinone products, unless prescribed by a doctor, and try gentler, safer formulations that contain kojic acid, alpha arbutin, bear-berry extract and vitamin C.
I wash my face everyday, isn’t that enough?
You need to establish healthy habits when it comes to your skin. You have to do more than cleanse (preferably with something without soap which is drying) to take care of the largest organ on your body. Start a regular regimen morning and night including cleansing, scrubbing, toning and moisturizing.
Rahim from Nyraju shows you just how simple it is using the Natural Black Skin Care Sample Kit for Men. Some of his tips include multi-tasking steps like brushing your teeth while the cleanser is on your face and being sure to rinse thoroughly.
You need to scrub (exfoliate to get rid of those dead skin cells), tone (bring your skin back to its natural pH level) and moisturize (with a cream to protect your skin). Men want to stay youthful looking too. An Antioxidant Face Cream that’s packed full of antioxidants and natural ingredients will help to retard signs of aging in your skin, resulting in softness and a moisture-rich appearance.
It’s easier than you think!
What care do I need to do for my facial hair as an African American man?
Black men invariably have curlier, C-shaped facial hair that can lead to a very painful and chronic in-grown hair problem on the face and throat. In-grown hair, in turn, may result in painful bumps and hyper-pigmentation Gentle exfoliation before each shaving session with a scrub can help tremendously.
Try an exfoliator that contains fine glycolic micro-beads, jojoba wax beads or even try a do-it-yourself exfoliator by mixing water and baking soda – but avoid any exfoliator that contains ground nuts!)
I have a bald head. What about care for that?
After you shave your bald head, using a high quality, natural cleanser can soothe your skin. A rosewater toner not only strengthens and brings the skin back to its proper pH level, but doesn’t sting! Of course you need good sunscreen (aim for SPF of 55 or higher), fellas, for protection from those UV rays.
Of course it needs to be moisturized, smooth and shiny. Massaging natural oils like sweet almond or coconut, are great for your daily regimen and to prevent dryness and dandruff.
What about other things like lifestyle? Do they count?
Just as we always prescribe for our ladies, we urge men to take a holistic approach too:
Brothers, we are happy you’re caring for yourselves and aim for healthier (and sexier) skin!
As always …
