Products for beautiful black skin? Today, there exists thousands if not millions of skin care products on the shelves. How many of them are specifically for the care of your beautiful black skin?
Do they speak to your challenges: oily skin, hyperpigmentation, dark spots, acne or dry skin without damaging your skin? How much money have you spent looking for the right combination only to be disappointed … again? Product alone won’t be the answer, nutrition plays a very important role.
Most of you choose to begin with products first. If this is the case here are a few things to consider.
The selection of a product is dependent on the type and condition of your skin. Skin types are oily, dry, normal and combination. Skin conditions are acne, eczema, itchy, redness and rashes to name a few.
For oily skin, a product containing lactic acid (milk based) as an ingredient, would help remove dirt and oil while balancing the moisture in you skin.
Dry skin would benefit from the use of hyaluronic acid and Shea butter (not raw). They contain natural moisturizers that help keep your skin from getting chapped or dry.
Discoloration and hyper-pigmented skin can benefit from ingredients such as citric acid and cocoa butter. They have been known to work as natural lighteners and exfoliators.
Although your skin is prone to oiliness, it doesn’t mean that your choice of products should be geared all oily skin. Getting to know your skin as its own unique universe will help you make the best selection in products.
Products for your black skin care regimen are important. Your regimen will give your skin the care it needs on a daily basis. A regimen gives your skin consistency in cleanliness, as well as moisturizing it to enhance its texture and glow.
A visit to an esthetician that specializes in caring for dark skin beauties will help you and your skin. At least a visit every six weeks will remove deep embedded sludge that’s built up over time. An esthetician can help in removing it without damaging your melanin.
Your esthetician will do things for your skin that you cannot do: deep clean, hair removal as well as peels/exfoliation. Your home care regimen will continue the care in between visits.
Cleansers that are milk based can work for all skin types. They are creamed based cleansers and gentle, yet effective enough, to remove dirt and debris without harming your skin.
Sunscreens are not often considered when caring for your beautiful black skin. You naturally have an SPF between 15-30. Because you spend time in the sun without a hat, as the elders used to do, you need some help. A mineral base sunscreen can be beneficial to your skin without the chemicals that sunscreens are typically known to have.
Natural skin lighteners and brighteners are used for hyperpigmentation and dark spots. Glycolic acids are often used to address these challenges and are certainly used for acne breakouts. Glycolic acids work to expose a healthy layer of skin providing you with a beautiful glow.
Balms are typically a Shea butter and beeswax based product that help with knees and elbows. The friction of kneeling, driving (arm rest), bending and rough clothing can often cause dark, dry, chapped skin in these areas. Balms can soften your skin and with the help of some essential oils, they’ve been known to lighten them up.
Products that at least have these ingredients should be considered. The challenges you face are not always considered when it comes to options for your skin. Look for companies that are owned and operated by people that have your best interest and skin at heart.
That’s it for this week. As always …
