Microdermabrasion is the removal of dead skin cells by way of machine.  But lately there’s been a lot of talk about the two types of treatments that are used.  Those two types are known as Chrystal and Diamond Tip treatments.

Chrystal Microdermabrasion is the removal or wearing away of dead skin cells by means of heat, force or friction. Crystal microdermabrasion uses a high speed flow of the aluminum oxide crystals that are “blasted” as in sand blasted onto your skin

The Diamond Tip method of microdermabrasion is polishing or cleansing by rubbing, scratching, grating, sanding or grinding.  So the Diamond microdermabrasion treatment is used to “scratch or sand” away the top level of your skin.

In simple terms: Crystal microdermabrasion is compared to sand blasting and diamond treatments can be compared to using sand paper.

What a way to talk about caring for your skin.  That’s an oxymoron, to sand blast or use sand paper on your beautiful black skin is not actually caring for your skin.  But, when you allow this particular service to be done,  this is what is taking place.

What Are Some of the Things to Know If You’re Considering Using These methods of Treatment on Your Darker Skin Tones?

Microdermabrasion Crystals

  • Have been used for the last 2o years and aluminum oxide is the second hardest mineral next to diamonds.

  • Aluminum oxide doesn’t cause allergic or adverse reactions.  Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)  is an organic alternative to aluminum oxide crystals but a lot softer and less effective in microdermabrasion.  Baking soda is used on patients with hyperpigmentation and can easily be washed off after your treatment.

Diamond Microdermabrasion

  • Is crystal free and unlikely to leave particles in your eyes, nose or mouth.  But crystal free isn’t really completely safe.

  • Bacteria from the skin that has been exfoliated stays on the tip and can unknowingly spread to another area of your face or body.

This article is meant to introduce you to the two types of microdermabrasion treatments that are currently being used in the world of esthetics.  Have you had a microdermabrasion treatment?  If so, how has it affected your skin as a person of color?  I’d love to hear from you, please leave a comment for me.
