Menopause and Your Skin

Menopause ? Not there yet…  experiencing menopause that is. Well… as a woman you will be.  And … as a man,  you’ll have your encounter with menopause as long as there’s a woman in your life.   Menopause opens up a whole new way of living and I’d like to share some of those ways with you.

Menopause…aka-the twins –  Meno and Pause.   To a lot of men it’s known as Men On Pause. Menopause introduces some of us to the elite “CRS” Club …aka (Can’t Remember Sh..).

Simply put though, Menopause is the cessation of menstruation, for over 12 consecutive months, that occurs for most women around 50.

Some of you are seeing this change in your late 40’s.

What does menopause have to do with your skin?  Everything!!

– Collagen production decreases and collagen fibers collapse, making your entire skin structure start to sag and loosen.  You begin to lose muscle mass and muscle tone.

– Your facial skin gets thinner and sometimes appears more translucent.

– It excretes less oil and becomes drier.

– It’s not as plump as it use to be.

– You see a dull and tired reflection in the mirror.

– Melanin production slows, so your skin tone fades.  Some women have increased skin discoloration.

– Glandular activity slows down, which actually means that you don’t sweat as much.    Now, I know that some of you are asking … Is that before or after the hot flash?  Bottom line…when you don’t sweat you don’t eliminate toxins.

Menopause Happens, Now What?

Menopause happens, it’s part of the natural cycle of  life. However, you are still in charge of how good your skin looks.

It doesn’t necessarily mean more work but a different focus and daily black skin care routine will help.

By keeping your entire body vibrant and healthy, you’ll be doing a great thing for your face.  This is when overall wellness kicks in as a way of thinking.

Some Tips Include:

– Exercise -strength training to maintain muscle mass and tone and to keep the body fat levels in a safe range.  Strength training includes using free weights, working out with weight machines at your local health club or doing Pilate’s exercises.

Walk, swim, do aerobics to keep the heart rate up

– Take In Your Essential Fatty Acids Daily – This helps prevent cancer, menopause symptoms, bone loss and high cholesterol.

– Eat Your Vegetables and Fruits Daily.  Here’s where you’ll find your antioxidants, bioflavonoids, vitamins, minerals and fiber.  Eat your kale, collards, broccoli, peppers, blueberries, strawberries just to name a few

– Maintain An Active Sex Life.  Sex stimulates the production of reproductive hormones.  If your sex life has diminished with the coming of menopause, ask your doctor about alternatives to re-stimulate your sex drive.  For some of you it will increase.

Your Black Skin Care Regimen For Menopausal Skin:

– Continue to cleanse, tone and moisturize daily. You  might end up switching skin care products because your skin is changing.

– Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.  Use a gentle exfoliant because your skin could be more sensitive now.

– To correct skin discoloration caused by the slowing down of melanin production, use skin lighteners.  It might take a bit longer but the more natural based these lighteners are the better.

– Use skin care products that contain antioxidants, bioflavonoids and vitamin C.

Be patient with yourself and your skin and learn to love the New Person you’re becoming.

That’s it for this wee.  As always …
