As Mature Black Women you’re speaking up for what you want. Maturing, aging, getting older … what ever you want to call it, doesn’t have to be all bad.
One of the things you want is awesome looking skin. Since the beauty of your skin is closely tied to what you eat, you get to look and feel good at the same time.
You didn’t just get to the “mature person” that you are now. It’s been a gradual process all of your life. Don’t believe the reflection staring back at you in the mirror?! Take a look at pictures over the years. Not only has your skin changed, your hair and body have had its experiences too.
While you can’t go back in time and undo what is your current situation, you can begin with where you are and move forward.
Your maturing skin is experiencing peri-menopause, if not menopause itself. You’ll begin to see signs of estrogen levels declining. There will also be signs of less oil, meaning your skin could become drier.
If you had oily skin most of your life, you could experience a balancing of oils and have some of the best skin of your life.
To care for your mature skin, a basic regimen will work. Cleanse, tone and moisturize. If you do nothing else this will work wonders. The key to awesome looking skin as you mature, is a regimen.
Cleansers that are milk based cleansers work best. They’re non-invasive, no detergent and won’t strip the natural oils from your skin.
A toner helps with keeping the pH balance of your skin.
Moisturizers help minimize wrinkles. Go figure! Don’t have wrinkles? A lot of you don’t. What about dull, gray, ashy looking skin? Moisturizers can offer another level of protection to your skin, warding off dull and ashy skin.
They also help your makeup go on much smoother, preventing you from pulling your skin.
Once a week, add an exfoliant and serum to your regimen. An exfoliant will remove any dead skin cell build up. A serum helps deliver higher concentrations of certain ingredients to your skin. This enables your skin to retain its moisture. By adding these two products to your regimen, it will help build on your natural glow.
Since beauty begins with what you eat, let’s take a look at your eating habits. I get calls weekly from mature women wanting to address what’s happening to their skin. I always ask a series of questions. These four top the list:
What are you eating? – Taking in green foods, whole grains and fresh fruit can help cleanse your colon. A clean colon will not only show you beautiful skin, you’ll experience more energy as well.
How much water are you drinking? – Drinking half your body’s weight in water will help with hydration. A dehydrated body, experiences dull, ashy, gray looking skin.
What’s your stress level like? – Stress can wreak havoc on your skin. Not all breakouts and skin discoloration are acne related. Stress can easily contribute to your skin challenges.
Are you getting any form of exercise? – One of the best ways to get more oxygen throughout your system is to exercise. Exercise causes you to sweat. This helps release impurities from your skin, as well as your body.
Unless you make it a way of life, exercise, eating right and drinking water, can easily be put off to another day. Don’t ever put your health on the back burner.
Okay my dark skin mature beauties. That’s it for this week. As always …
