Why do we choose to wear make up and cover up the most beautiful skin in the world? For some of us, we wear make up to cover dark spots or skin discoloration. For others, we wear it thinking that we’re not beautiful unless we wear it.
Have you ever heard the saying “less is more”.
Here are 5 tips for African American Women to consider when choosing to wear make up.
- Cleanse your face with a facial cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type. Oily, normal, dry or a combination, your skin should be clean before you put any type of make up on. Applying make up to an unclean face will create build up that creates blackheads and unwanted skin conditions.
- Use a moisturizer. Moisturizers create a smooth palette for your make up. Some moisturizers have antioxidants and also hydrate your skin so that as you apply your make up you won’t have to pull and tug on the skin allowing for your make up to glide right on.
- Choose the appropriate make up for the occasion. Heavy shadows and layers of foundation will be best worn for photo shoots or night time events. Sheer bronzers or mineral make ups can be worn to give your skin just the right finish without appearing overdone for daytime use.
- Lip Gloss & Lip Sticks – A little color is always good. As African American women, we have a natural hint of color on our lips. So a sheer or tinted lip gloss is perfect for daytime use, saving fabulous color choices for parties and late night dinners.
- Always check the expiration dates on your products. Mascaras, eye shadows, foundations all have a shelf life, so create a system that works for you to determine how long you’ve had a given product on your shelf. Six months is standard for products used on your face, after this timeline you might want to replenish your product mix.
