Hyperpigmentation- What Is It?

Hyperpigmentation is an increase in your skin’s melanin which results in a darker color. The causes of this include pregnancy, Addison’s disease, exposure to sunlight and some medication such as antibiotics, antimalarial and anti-arrhythmic drugs.

It occurs anywhere in the body but mostly in the facial area. Yes, it can be unsightly but the thing is, you can do something about it without spending a fortune in laser treatments.

Melasma is a form of hyperpigmentation. This is characterized by dark patches mostly in the face and is usually caused by too much sun exposure. Both men and women can develop melasma.

This is why it is important to lessen sun exposure no matter what age you are.  It’s also to prevent this or at least minimize the chances of developing it. Pregnancy can also cause these dark spots but usually go away after giving birth.

If you are not pregnant and you have this, take note that sunlight can make the condition worse, so avoid the sun as much as possible and keep your skin protected even though you are just staying indoors. Before going out, apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30. This skin discoloration is also called age spots or liver spots.

Treating Skin Discoloration With Natural Products

If you notice the discoloration early, it will be easier to treat. You may apply Aloe Vera gel you can buy over-the-counter or use fresh Aloe Vera plant and squeeze the gel on the darkened spots. Both are effective for new age spots and you can see a noticeable difference in a few months. You may also use Aloe Vera soap to prevent dark spots from developing.

There are over-the-counter whitening creams that you can use as well but consult with your dermatologist first before applying anything chemical. Natural solutions are generally safe because you are using proven ingredients from fruits and vegetables and you are also treating your skin to its antioxidant properties.

Preventive measures are important in keeping clear skin. To maintain an even skin tone, exfoliate regularly to shed old skin cells and give way to fresh skin. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables so your skin stays healthy from the inside out.

Although skin discoloration usually comes with age and environmental factors, your healthy habits can make a big difference in slowing down its appearance. There is no need to spend for expensive treatments. There are plenty of solutions waiting in your kitchen.

Raw potatoes have a mild bleaching property. Simply squeeze the juice out and apply to dark spots. Cucumber juice can also help lighten your age spots. Milk powder, lemon juice, honey and almond oil can be mixed and applied on your skin regularly for about 20 minutes at a time for even skin tone. Do this at night so you don’t need to get exposed in the sun afterwards.

Remember that you did not develop hyperpigmentation overnight so removing the spots may take a while. Just treat your skin to these natural solutions regularly and you will see results after a few months. When it comes to skin health, a holistic approach is the best way to take. If you keep a good skin regimen, eat a balanced diet and lead a healthy lifestyle, your skin will glow and stay clear for the longest time possible.
