Split ends, medically known as trichoptilosis, is a very common hair problem. As an African American you are prone to it because your hair is fragile and susceptible to dryness which contributes to developing split ends.
This hair problem occurs when the end of your hair shaft frays, usually as a result of over exposure to heat or improper natural hair care such as rough hair manipulation or styling.
To prevent split ends, limit your use of a blow dryer or flat iron because the direct heat from these appliances is damaging your hair.
Many women perform daily heat styling without realizing the damage they’re doing to their hair. Whenever you do use such tools, which shouldn’t be more than twice a week, stick with the lowest heat setting and don’t forget to use a heat protectant which comes in all forms from sprays to gels.
Also, avoid using combs with fine or small teeth because you’ll end up yanking it through your hair and this will cause hair breakage. Instead, invest in a wide-tooth comb that will not fray or damage your hair. Whatever comb or brush you use, always brush your hair gently.
Deep conditioning once a week is also recommended not just for general natural hair care but to prevent split ends. When deep conditioning your hair, you should pay extra attention to the tips of your hair which are the oldest hair growth. The ends of the hair are the most fragile and most prone to dryness so make sure they are well-conditioned.
Moisturize your hair with a natural hair oil that might include coconut oil and olive oil, which deeply penetrate hair strands to provided needed moisture.
Natural oils can also be used to seal the moisture to protect hair from drying out which can lead to split ends. Some also recommend getting a hair trim every other month to prevent split ends.
Unfortunately, once you get split ends, the damage cannot be repaired with any black hair care products, no matter what advertisements claim. The appearance of split ends can be reduced but it cannot be completely repaired. The only solution to eliminate split ends is a hair trim.
Some can do the trimming on their own with a good pair of shears but if you’re not up to it, your trusted salon can definitely help you. Still, the best way to deal with split ends is prevention.
Follow the natural hair care tips above to make sure your hair stays healthy from root to tip.
