Having dark skin has many advantages. Not only is the rich, deep hue aesthetically appealing, but the presence of large amounts of melanin can provide protection against the harshness of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. However, as with most skin, it can be prone to different challenges. An example of this is having dry skin.

Shea butter is among the top natural treatments that can be used on dry and sensitive skin. It is chocked full of vitamins and nutrients that provide a protective layer on the skin. Shea butter has the ability to refresh the skin and bring back its original suppleness and texture. The good news is that dry skin responds fast to the effects of shea butter. Thus, the skin is able to retain moisture better and becomes more elastic immediately after application. Shea butter in black skin makes it easier to repair the damage sustained by the skin, such as flaking and itchiness, caused by excessive dryness.

In addition to making the skin feel better, shea butter has the ability to even out the skin tone. If you have ever experienced dryness on the largest organ in your body, you will know that there is a tendency for white spots to develop where the skin is particularly dry. The application of the shea butter on black skin can reduce this as well as get rid of the streaking that happens when dry skin is scratched.

In order to fully take advantage of the benefits offered by this natural beauty product, make sure that the water used when taking a shower before application is lukewarm. Avoid water in extreme temperature, particularly if it is hot. Hot water can strip off the oils in the skin. For those with skin that is too dry, do not soak in the water for more than 10 minutes.

The shea butter should be used in conjunction with other natural products such as vegetable soaps. These types of soaps are made out of vegetable oil and cleanses without stripping the moisture from the skin. Even better, use soaps that contain shea butter to provide gentle cleansing action while giving access to its moisturizing properties.

Finally, apply the shea butter while the skin is still damp in order to ensure that the moisture is sealed in. Do not rub your skin with a towel and instead blot it dry. This is much more considerate of your body’s fragile protective layer. Choose products that contain 20 to 100 percent shea butter in order to get rid of dry skin.

“Black don’t crack”, guess again.  Without keeping your beautiful black skin moisturized, you might look down at it and think you’re looking at a road map.
