Long before miracle serums in a bottle or even packaged soaps,  as African Americans,  we were caring for our skin with plant and flower extracts in order to heal It and our senses.  Aromatherapy targets the physical and psychological ailments through inhalation and topical therapies, often producing immediate results.

By learning to incorporate aromatherapy into your body treatments whether at home or in a spa, you’re giving your skin the perfect opportunity to transform into a radiant glowing specimen.

When using plant and flower oils in skin care treatments for  African American Skin, you not only receive a sweet smelling service or experience, you get the alternative to invasive medical procedures.  Hold on to your pants, this doesn’t mean that you don’t consult a physician when faced with skin issues.  But a physician that will incorporate alternative medicine into their practice is a wonderful find.   The use of aromatherapy for black skin care not only heals your body, mind and spirit, but it enhances your well-being also.

Scent enters your body in less than one second, bringing about an almost immediate response.  The aroma triggers the brain to react, and when the scent is inhaled into your lungs, the natural chemical of the plants can help anything from headaches to menopause.

Bare in mind that different aromas have a variety of effects on a person, from relaxation to stimulation to euphoria.  While natural extracts are safe for most people, there are a few safety guidelines to keep in mind when using them.

  • Pure aromatherapy oils are highly concentrated and should never be applied directly to your skin.
  • Use a carrier oil to dilute the essential oils you’ll be working with.  This creates a sate concentration of the product reducing the high toxic level in a pure oil.
  • Some carrier oils are  sweet almond, sunflower, and jojoba oils, these are hydrating oils.  Coconut, camellia seed and evening primrose are great carrier oils for anti-inflammatory conditions of the skin.  While olive, grape seed and cranberry seed oils are great antioxidants for your skin.

Here is a list of what is considered to be the Top 7 of Essential Oils.

  1. Clary Sage-While considered a natural pain killer, it’s also soothing, calming and can help with insomnia and the balancing of hormones.
  2. Eucalyptus-Is often used to treat respiratory problems and boosts the immune system.
  3. Geranium-Uplifting, relaxing and used as an antidepressant, this beauty also balances your hormones and tones your skin and its texture.
  4. Lavender-Considered the universal oil, lavender is calming and relieves tension.  Can be used to treat wounds, burns and imbalanced skin
  5. Peppermint- Used to treat head and muscle aches and digestive disorder
  6. Roman Chamomile-naturally relaxing, can help cure sleeplessness and anxiety.
  7. Tea Tree-While naturally anti-fungal, it can help to treat vaginal yeast infection, jock itch and ringworm.

Further study of aromatherapy is greatly advised. The science of blending these oils can create some of the most beautiful skin care products for African American Skin.
