Finding Natural Body Products For African American Skin

Remember the “Good News/Bad News” jokes?  The “I have some good news and some bad news…”  Well, I have good news and a little bit of bad news about your skin.

The good news is African American skin has more melanin, which protects your skin from the sun.  Unfortunately, melanin also means your skin is more prone to scarring, (keloids) discoloration from injuries and acne. So, how do you find the best natural body products for your skin as an African American?

Knowledge is Power When Looking for Natural Body Products.

You must do some research before deciding what body products are right for you.  Go on the internet, and get some facts about African American skin.  There’s lots of information on my blog but your can also find some good articles on the Essence magazine website, and a simple ‘Google’ search can lead you to other sources, such as style and fashion blogs.

Once you read a few pieces, you’ll have a good idea on what body products are available, their price, and whether or not they meet your skin and body care needs.

Comparison of Natural Body Products is Your Best Friend

Comparison of body products might cost you a bit of money but it’s sometimes necessary to experiment in order to find the right product for you.  Without comparing different products, you’ll never know what will work for you.  Reading reviews of a product before you choose one has become the norm but keep in mind that what works for one person may not work for you and your African American skin.

You can get a general consensus of what the reviewer loved about a cleanser, body butter, lotion, or anti-keloid product but only by using them on your skin will you get true results.  How it feels on your skin and most importantly, did it do everything it claimed it would do, is key.

Never choose a product for your body because you’ve seen the television or magazine ad almost a thousand times.  Commercials pay people to say great things about their products and models have professionals to make their skin and body look perfect.

You can’t always judge a book by its’ cover or a cleanser by its advertisements.  You need objective information before you spend your hard earned cash on body products for your African American skin. And sometimes trying them for yourself is the only way to get the best opinion and results.

The Next Step

Now, you’ve done your homework, and have a few body products in mind.  What next? The market for African American body products is growing, and more retailers are taking advantage of the trends.

But are they made from natural ingredients that are beneficial to your skin. You don’t want to put a cheap product, or a soap filled with harsh chemicals on your skin.

Remember you have the most sensitive skin on the planet and not all products sold on the market are made with your skin in mind.

Look for natural ingredients that are known to nourish and replenish the moisture in your skin such as, Shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, olive oil, coconut oil and other natural ingredients that are known to enhance your beauty.

Let the Seller Beware

That’s right, let the seller beware of you, the well-informed buyer.  Before you purchase any body product for your skin, read the ingredient list.  If you are looking for a natural cleanser, avoid any product that has sulfates—they tend to make the skin feel tight.

When the label reads like a chemistry textbook, with long names and numbers, it’s probably a chemical product, not a natural one.  It may be a good idea to bring your cellphone/smartphone and do a search on any unusual ingredients before you buy it.

So, do your homework and find body products that help your skin. After all, you’re looking for a natural experience in skin care for your entire body not just your face.
