Grief, Stress and Skin Care?
Skin care conversations for melanin-rich skin are everywhere, from managing it in different climates to protecting it from environmental stressors.
But what about the effects of emotional stress? What happens to your skin when you ’re navigating life’s most difficult moments?
I want to talk about something deeply personal today, something that many of you will face or have faced at some point. My aunt, who is like a second mother to me, is in hospice care. My uncle has chosen to take her home. Watching her transition to the Ancestor Realm is a profound experience. Her skin remains flawless, soft, radiant, and smooth. And yet, those of us around her, shouldering the weight of emotions, are experiencing breakouts, dullness, and ashy skin.
This contrast made me stop and ask …. Why is stress showing up so clearly on our skin? And more importantly, how do we care for ourselves in these moments when we feel like we have nothing left to give? If you’ve been in this space, grieving, caregiving, or simply dealing with the weight of life, this is for you.
Stress isn’t just something we feel, it manifests physically, often in our skin. For melanin-rich complexions, this can mean:
Self-care isn’t about vanity, it’s about resilience. It’s about allowing yourself space to process emotions while still honoring the vessel that carries you through it all.
Here are a few simple ways to nourish your skin when stress is at its highest:
Hydrate, Inside & Out – Drink water, herbal teas, or even coconut water to replenish lost moisture. Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser and follow up with a nourishing moisturizer to keep your skin balanced.
Soothe with Aromatherapy & Gentle Touch – Incorporate calming ingredients like chamomile, aloe, or rosewater into your skin care routine. A few drops of jojoba or marula oil massaged into your skin can be both healing and grounding.
Prioritize Rest in Any Form – If sleep is difficult, take short naps, meditate, or simply lie down with a cool compress over your eyes. A silk pillowcase can help prevent further moisture loss during restless nights.
Make Skincare a Ritual – Even if it’s just five minutes, washing your face with warm water, applying a face mask, moisturizer or using a hydrating mist, can be a moment of peace in an otherwise chaotic time.
Lean on Community & Self-Compassion – Grief and stress don’t just live in your mind, they show up in your body. Be gentle with yourself. If possible, find moments of care with loved ones, sip tea together, take a walk, or do a simple skin care ritual side by side.
As I navigate this time, I’m reminded that caring for our skin isn’t just about beauty. It’s about love, about honoring ourselves even in the hardest moments. My aunt’s skin remains radiant, untouched by stress, as if she has already transcended these earthly burdens. And while those of us still here carry the weight of grief and exhaustion, we can also take small, meaningful steps to care for ourselves.
If you are in this space, if stress has shown up on your skin in ways that feel overwhelming, know that you are not alone. Your skin—and your spirit—deserve care, even in the midst of life’s most difficult moments.
Be gentle with yourself. And when you can, take a moment to breathe, to hydrate, and to nurture the skin that carries you through it all.
Until next time ….
