Caring for black skin can be a joy and a delight for most estheticians but do you as the client, know what to look for when getting a professional facial from one of them?

If you’ve ever had a professional facial, you’ll know that it can be a wonderful experience.  It can also be a traumatic experience if the person treating your beautiful black skin doesn’t understand how to work with your melanin.

Most people equate a facial with a feel good experience and this can be true.  But it’s actually a science and study of the entire body even though you’re just having a service done to your face.

Estheticians are trained to know the skeletal system, the muscular system, the circulatory system, the endocrine system and the nervous system, not to mention how they all interact with caring for your skin.

Did you know that you shouldn’t have a facial if you have a cold sore?  Did you know that certain medications can cause extreme sensitivity to your skin and you shouldn’t have a facial?

Did you that certain ingredients and essential oils are photosensitive and will cause trauma to your skin if you go into the sun too soon after their use?

With all that being said, why would you get a facial?

Professional facials are great for treating pigment issues from acne scarring and skin discoloration.  Facials are also great for deep pore treatments with the removal of grim and dirt that often gets trapped beneath your pores.

Facials are also a great way to bring your skins pH level into balance, remove dead skin cells and they provide you with the opportunity to learn how to take care of your skin in your home environment.

How can the Esthetician help you with your skin care needs?

Estheticians offer many services, and should be able to interact with you and answer your questions about your skin.

As an African American you want someone who understands your melanin, how to work with it without drying it out and scaring it with harsh abrasives.

A recommendation often works well when looking for someone to work on your beautiful black skin.  But remember your skin is not the skin of the person making the recommendation and therefore will not always guarantee the same outcome from the esthetician.

What you can look for is the level of comfort you feel when interviewing the esthetician.  Yes … you will be conducting the interview.

The esthetician will be determining your skin care needs, but you will be determining whether or not you like the energy, level of professionalism and most of all the cleanliness of the environment in which they work.

What does the workstation look like? Is it neatly organized? Does it smell good? Has the floor been mopped or can your see dirt on its surface?

Finally …

Is this a service that you are willing to pay for?  Many of you will pay for that great pair of shoes you tried on or the handbag you saw to match them, but when it comes to caring for your skin, you skimp on the very service that could prevent challenges down the line.

Dark spots, dryness and dull ashy uneven skin tones can all be avoided or at least minimized,  if you’ll put caring for your beautiful black skin up higher on your list of what’s important.
