What skin care tips do you remember your mother giving you that help you take care of your beautiful black skin?  All of the women in my family had  great skin.  Not as true for the younger one’s though.  For one thing, the younger women in the family don’t eat or exercise the way I was trained to do AND they feel as though their friends know better than their Elders.

Here are three basic tips that were shared with me from a few of you and some of my dear friends.  Here’s what their mom’s told them:

  • Wash your face –  In today’s world of words, we now use the term cleanse your face. Do you remember how your mother use to clean your face?  One of my friends said that her mother rubbed her face so hard she felt like her mom was washing the black off.  But mothers referred to it as giving your face a good scrubbing.  Didn’t your face shine after your mom finished?  She cleaned and exfoliated your face in one move.
  • Put some grease on your face – OK, so we’ll look at this as moisturizing your face. It was unanimous from those of you that I spoke with that this was the vaseline moment.  I could never use vaseline.  When I was younger, I thought something was wrong with me.  Everybody I knew used that product, I didn’t realize that I was fortunate.  But what did I get put on my face?  I got the cream skimmed off the top of the milk.  This is when milk was actually squeezed from the cows and delivered by trucks to your home.  (Oops, did I just date myself)
  • Keep your hands off your face and stop picking those bumps – This is where a lot of the dark spots come from when we’re younger.  We pick bumps thinking it will help speed up the process of it disappearing only to realize that the aftermath is with us for a long time.

Some of you have shared stories of having lard and butter put on your face to soften it.  Don’t laugh!  It often worked.  So what black skin care tips would you give your young daughters to get them off to a good start?

We’d tell them the same basic things our mother’s told us:

  • Keep your face clean
  • Keep it soft and moisturized
  • Keep your hands off your face and stop picking those bumps
