What happens when your client is 1 1/2 to 13 and they’ve got the most beautiful black skin you’ve ever seen?  You have a blast!  I was fortunate enough to provide the service of facials for a group of 8 young ladies age 1 1/2 to 13. It was a gift for one of them that was graduating from elementary school and moving into Middle School.

The 1 1/2 year old needed no facial but she did want the nails and toes done.  After all, big sisters were having all the fun.

The party was held at Nana’s house. As I arrived, the grandfather was waiting on the father of the young  girl, who was being given the party to arrive, because they were leaving. Eight girls and five adult women.  You got it!

I took my spa table and set up in the room provided for me.  The dining room had been turned into a spa room.  Sheer fabrics draped the entry into my space.  Fountains were running and soft music was playing.  Yes ladies the whole spa environment was there.

At another station  in the family room, manicures and pedicures were given.  And at the final station in the breakfast room,  was arts and crafts.  The girls were given small canvas bags and they made their own spa bags.  We provided spa samples of body wash, bath salts and body butters as take-a-ways.

The had pizza but they also had veggie wraps, fruit trays and veggie platters with a great dip. The girls were drinking punch from champagne flutes.  It was all about the ambiance  and they enjoyed everything.

They danced, they sang and had a genuinely good time.  As I was packing up to leave, I thought they’d worn themselves out and was ready for bed, but it Was a sleep over, and they were gearing up for phase two.

The beauty of this night was that I got a chance to participate in a special event for some special girls.  It was the first time for them to receive a facial.  When I shared my experience with some adult friends, they were thrilled.  You see, as African American women, we’re not always privy to the luxury of a professional facial or spa treatment, and to be able to participate in this event was a complete joy.

These young ladies are being taught to embrace their beautiful black skin and take time out for themselves.  I talked with some of the mothers as they dropped the girls off and they were delighted because it gave them some “Me” time.

You know this works for adults also.  So the next time you and your girlfriends get together, make it a spa night.
