Who would have thought that one of the most under utilized techniques for removing stress is the massage of your scalp.

Stress is the number 1 (one) enemy of wellness and your well-being.  Chronic stress can cause long-term anxiety.  A scalp massage can offer an immediate and extremely accessible solution, even if you do it yourself.

Try it!  As you read this article place your hands on your head and begin to move your fingers in a massage type motion all over your scalp.  Don’t forget that itch that popped up in the top of your head.  Now if you’ve got another set of hands in close range make use of them.  Your scalp massage will feel even better.

It’s a simple and modest technique.  If you’re in a spa or salon you won’t even have to take your close off to enjoy its benefits.

History and The Scalp Massage

Did you know that the roots of the scalp massage date back nearly 4000 years to a type of ayurvedic technique native to East India?  The term Indian Head Massage is what it’s referred to in today’s modern language.

In India, the practice involves oils that are said to keep your hair strong, lustrous and in beautiful condition.  Two of the main oils used for the scalp massage are Jojoba and Olive oil. It’s also said to prevent graying and thinning of your hair.  The intimacy of a head and scalp massage speaks to you in a healing experience that helps enhance your well-being.

Why do I reference the East Indian culture in this article?  If you look closely at the “True/Real” East Indian, you will find a group very similar in complexion and hair texture to you in India.  They are blue-black  in complexion and many have locked hair.  The Ayurvedic tradition of healing comes from their culture but they never get the credit for it.  Sound familiar?  When you have a few minutes in your busy schedule, study the “Untouchables” of India.

Scalp Massages in the African American Tradition

How many of you have experienced the hands of your mother or grandmother getting your hair ready for church on Sunday?  They’d oil your scalp and massage it with a quickness before they combed it and brushed in to a little bun or those two familiar braids/parted down the middle with the ribbon on the end of them.

The massage would feel so good you didn’t want it to stop.  Now you’re an adult and you’ve become so overwhelmed that you’ve forgotten what a simple scalp massage did for your soul.

If you long for a soft touch, a tender caring moment and the release of immediate stress, it’s as close as the fingertips of someone willing to share with you.
