Eczema and psoriasis … are you challenged by one of these skin conditions?  Typically you will see a small red rash and you’ll be wondering how it came to be.

Did you know that 20% of the world’s children suffer from eczema and 3% of adults suffer from eczema and psoriasis?

Since the worlds population just reached 7 billion and since the ‘majority’ of the ‘world’s’ population are brown people, this gives you a good idea of where you fit in.

Eczema, allergies and asthma are on the rise, with eczema being more common today than 30 years ago.

What has caused this increase in these skin conditions?  Inadequate diet is the leading culprit when your skin is challenged.

Do you prepare 9 out of 10 of the meals you consume?  Are they healthy?  Don’t cook, who’s in your neighborhood preparing your food?

If you don’t, the food you take in plays a huge roll in the condition of your skin. Pollution and other environmental stressors are also contributors.

While neither of these conditions is contagious or infectious they are often distressing to look at.

What Is Eczema?

Eczema also referred to as dermatitis can mean a whole family of skin conditions ranging from dandruff, to contact dermatitis.

In dermatology and skin care, eczema refers to atopic dermatitis, which is a chronic inflammatory skin disease.  It causes dry, itchy, irritated skin that requires care on a daily basis.

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis presents itchy, red skin and involves altered immunity. The big difference between eczema and psoriasis is that psoriasis has complexities that reach far beyond the surface of your skin.

People with psoriasis have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity and other immune related inflammatory diseases.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory multisystem of diseases.  It will often appear as red bumps.   As of today, psoriasis has no cure.

How do you manage the systems of Eczema and Psoriasis?

Although there is no cure for eczema and psoriasis, there are ways to manage

the symptoms.

When you’re working with a Skin Therapist, a consultation should take place.  It should be one that’s thorough and one in which you provide answers to questions about the medication that you are using to treat your skin.

General cleansing and exfoliation is crucial to allow for the penetration of rich, emollient moisturizers that are used on dry, sensitive skin.

Harsh exfoliants and detergents should be avoided and instead products that contain lactic acids should be used.

Treatments known as complimentary therapies, such as aromatherapy, acupressure, reflexology and massage can be coupled with skin treatments to lower stress hormones and control inflammation.

Keeping your stress level under control (easier said than done) and eating the right foods can minimize the challenge of eczema and psoriasis.
