Black Men and skin care. It’s no secret, men are walking through spa/salon doors as much as women.
There was a time when only “Player’s” got pampered and most of the services were done in barber shops.
Some ventured into a salon and actually sat under the dryer … with rollers … to keep their perm in check.
In order for black men to feel comfortable with skin care as a daily regimen, there are a few things to keep in mind if any retail establishment wants their business. When we were formulating our line for men, the one statement we kept hearing over and over again, was “Keep the Regimen Simple”.
Unlike a lot of skin care regimens for women, You do not want 15 steps in your regimen.
It’s bad enough that some of you feel you “have to” take care of your skin to get noticed among the other brothers (aka Competition), in the work and dating space. Now you’re being told you have to do something other than just wash your face.
It’s understandable that during your spa visit, you’ll go through a series of steps to get your skin in optimum handsome state. But what about a home care regimen?
A Simple Regimen – When first starting out, the key is to keep your skin care regimen simple: Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize. Once you’re comfortable and have the process in place, you can then add exfoliation to your regimen.
Acne – A lot of you have challenges with acne. Although more prevalent with teenagers, adult acne is increasing in men, so acne treatments are in high demand. It’s a good idea to get a professional facial every six weeks so that the breakouts can be minimized.
Anti-aging Treatments for Black Men – Yes, you want to minimize your wrinkles too! A lot of you are concerned about job security. Looking younger and healthy plays an important role in your arsenal as you sit at the top of the corporate ladder.
Beards, Mustache and Goatee – Some of you opt for one, others of you will choose all of the options when it comes to facial hair. How you care for facial hair is very important. Keeping your facial hair clean, moisturized and groomed is key. No one wants to have itchy dry hair rubbing against their skin.
Shaving – For black men and skin care, this is probably the single most important treatment you give your attention to. When done wrong, shaving that is, you get razor bumps. These bumps occur because, your curly hairs grow back into your skin. Some of you squeeze, some of you use tweezers and others damage your skin during shaving. Either way, it causes hyperpigmentation. Seek out treatments from an esthetician or dermatologist that will help restore your skin to its natural state.
Relax and don’t sweat the small stuff. New to the world of skin care for African American Men, Welcome. Confident and centered in this space, teach the new men on the block a thing or two about Men’s Grooming.
That’s it for this week.
