The condition of your hair largely depends on what you eat and not just on hair care products and treatments. If an unhealthy diet is consistently consumed, your hair looks and feels unhealthy as well. What is important to remember in black hair care is that foods play an important part in the proper maintenance of hair.

Keratin is a main component of the hair molecules and what makes the keratin is protein. Eating protein-rich food items can lead to healthy hair and a healthy scalp. Choose to have a diet that contains eggs, lean meats, and fish. For vegetarians, tofu and soy products are good alternatives.

Moisture is also quite essential in deciding what to eat to have healthy black hair. When your body becomes dehydrated, your hair tends to become dry and brittle. This can lead to limp and lifeless hair or even hair breakage. It is thus important to drink sufficient amounts of water every day. Also, have a diet that is rich in watery fruits such as watermelon and cantaloupes as this can lead to moisturizing and hydrating your hair from within.

A healthy diet for hair should contain a variety of vitamins and minerals. Look for foods that have vitamin C, E, and D. It can be quite confusing to formulate a diet that takes all the different nutrients into account. A good tip is to eat as many vibrant colors as possible in the day. Look for greens such as spinach and romaine lettuce as well as yellows from squash and oranges. Reds can come from peppers as well as fruits like apples. These types of food helps produce sebum that lead to shiny hair.

Calcium should also be a part of the diet to strengthen your hair. Calcium can be obtained from dairy products such as cheese and milk. Calcium is also found in almonds, black strap molasses and broccoli. It is needed to strengthen your hair and prevent the strands from breaking.

Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B-12, and iron should be essential parts of your diet. Salmon should be at the top of the list when it comes to what to eat to have healthy hair. These nutrients lead to a healthy scalp. When your scalp is healthy, it is able to support the roots of your hair better and lead to healthier growth. Vegetarians can get the same nutrients from having one to two tablespoons of flaxseed.
