We’ve seen it before and now it has a whole new freshness, Natural Hair that is! Celebrities flaunting their hair O-Nat-U-Ral. Whether it’s the natural freshness of the Afro from Angela Simmons and Esperanza Spalding or the naturally curly locs of Tracee Ellis Ross, Natural Hair is making a comeback.
Easy to maintain? Yes it is! No more difficult than managing a “relaxed” head of hair, as a matter of fact, it’s probably easier. Natural hair style offer you a wide variety of options. You can wear two strand twist, braids, locs, upsweeps, “The Fro”, the french roll , a bob-cut … You got it! You have just as many options as you would with straight hair, but will you take them?
When maintaining your hair, You don’t want to use fine tooth combs, you’ll rip your hair straight from its core shaft.
I’m always asked the question, how do you take care of natural hair? My answer, just as you’d take care of relaxed hair. You shampoo it, condition it and make sure that you give yourself a hot oil treatment twice a month.
Shampoo’s – for your natural hair care or any hair care for that matter, make sure that you’re not using shampoos heavy with detergents. I know you don’t think anything ( hair or body) is clean unless you see lots of lather. But do you realize that the more lather you see, the more you’re stripping your hair and your body of it’s natural oils.
Conditioner’s – I know that a lot of you like or think you should use leave in conditioners, but you might want to tread waters lightly. Yes, it will save you a step in caring for your hair but what are you actually leaving in your hair. Even the food you take into your body is eliminated, imagine what would happen if you left it in your colon. Okay, point made, but think about it.
Now back to conditioner’s, when you leave conditioners in your hair, especially your natural hair, you are inviting dirt, dubris and anything else that will attach itself to your hair to “Come On In”. Do you know what is in the conditioner that you are leaving in your hair? Is it good for your naturally curly locs? Will the ingredients do more harm than good?
Yes your natural hair welcomes softeners and moisturizers, so use them but rinse them out after 3-five minutes.
Hot Oil Treatment – Nothing like a hot oil treatment! It moisturizes your scalp and hair follicles and if you include an essential oil or two in your blend of coconut and jojoba oils, your hair will get a luxurious treat.
Yes, you’ll definitely have to rinse it out and the more oil you put in your hair, the more you’ll have to wash it. The more you wash it the more you’ll strip your natural oils from your hair.
Now our beautiful black celebrities probably don’t wash their own hair and neither do a lot of you. But one thing is certain, you want to know what’s in the products that you are using and you want to make sure they’re healthy for your natural black hair.
