In a previous article, How Do Popular Diets Affect African American Skin, I discussed the Low Carb, High Protein way of eating.  This article will continue the dialog of Popular Diets and Their Affect on African American Skin.  We’ll start off in the Zone.

The Zone Diet was designed by Dr. Barry Sears.  It incorporates components of healthy eating to control hormones like insulin (to much insulin contributes to weight gain), glucagon (tells your body to release stored carbohydrates) and eicosanoids( contributes to inflammation) to keep hunger under control and energy levels high.

The Zone Diet is low in calories but it still provides proper nutrition. This is the portion control diet.  One-third of your plate should be filled with lean protein (no bigger than what can fit into the palm of your hand), the remaining two-thirds should be comprised of fruits and /or vegetables.  Now there are some who will say that you shouldn’t mix fruit with vegetables, so we’ll talk about food combination’s in another article.  You’re to top off each meal with a healthy fat like Olive oil, avocado or almonds.

Now the downside of the Zone Diet, eating the proper portions for every meal and snack can be difficult for some.  And the low-carb intake can decrease your energy levels.

As for caring for your beautiful black skin, most experts feel that this is the one diet that poses no negative effects on your skin.  After all you’re including carbohydrates, healthy fats and proteins, all of which are needed to maintain your skin’s health.

I guess this is about as balanced as you can get, especially if you eat any form of protein(as in meat).  At least the portion is under control.
