You all know that the aging process is a part of life, yet the quest to look younger and maintain radiant looking skin still remains top of mind.  But what are some of the factors that contribute to the maturing of your beautiful black skin?

Factors That Age Your Skin

First of all not only does aging affect your appearance but it affects the texture and color of your skin as well as the shape of your face.  To look in the mirror and see your jaw line and neck slowly become one unit has created quite the reality for some more so than others.

There are three main factors that contribute to the process of aging:

Internal Factors – The Internal factors that contribute to aging are those that come naturally.  The process of life’s journey is real because the fact that each day moves you through a life cycle that can’t be denied.  Then there’s genetics, what did those in your family look like as they matured?  Are your lifestyle habits the same, worse or better?

The one “myth” that must be acknowledged, is that as women of color, we still think that our “black don’t crack.”  It might take longer but if it’s not taken care of your black will certainly crack.

External Factors – The external factors that contribute to the aging of your beautiful black skin would be attributed to smoking, over eating and believe it or not, too much sun.

Have you ever noticed how the skin of smokers is more wrinkled, especially around their lips?  All of the nicotine is being drawn to that area and you see the lines forming and elasticity being reduced.  Then you’re hit with the rays of the sun and this is definitely not good for your skin or its elasticity.

Maturing black skin needs moisturizers and serums in order to keep it well hydrated and nourished.

Hormonal aging – Did you know that your skin is a hormone dependent organ?  When the twins Meno and Pause (menopause) show up, you’ll begin to see a decline in the quality of your skin.  What used to be oily skin for some of you will be less oily and appear to be normal.  What used to be normal might become dry and dry skin will definitely need more moisturizer.

Estrogen has a profound effect on your skin.  It encourages extracellular production and prevents the decrease in collagen and your skin‘s thickness.  Diabetes, hypothyroidism, cancer and infection can compromise your skin as you mature.

Taking a Holistic Approach to Anti-Aging and Maturing Black Skin

New technologies have become increasingly available in the anti-aging skin care market but will they be the best choices when caring for mature black skin?

Caring for your maturing skin means caring for your body as a whole and complete unit, not just topical products.

You’ve all heard it before, “You are what you eat”.  Your nutritional program is extremely important.  Not only does the food you eat affect your skin but it also makes you sluggish if you’re consuming lots of sugar, high amounts of the wrong carbohydrates, processed foods and no vegetables and little water.

Your blood, your cells, your bones and muscle all benefit from the vitamins and nutrients your take into your body.  Therefore, your skin becomes the reflection of what you’re fed it.

Use the holistic approach and treat the whole body and you’ll see a constant and radiant flow from your skin.
