Creams, potions and mask have been in your skin care arsenal for centuries. Is there magic when it comes to carrying for your skin? Ask you Mom or Nana. Some of us are a bit more mature than others of you. So if we were to search back into our mental database of what we asked our elders, the ingredients would be shocking in today’s world.
There were things like Lard. Typically Lard (pork fat) was used to cook with. Well … if it came Sunday morning and there was no cream, a small amount of lard would be used to oil your body down. Face included.
Summer months brought in floral scented flour. Yes, dried rose petals, were often placed into a jar with flour. The flour became infused with the scent of the rose and applied to your body as if it were body powder. It absorbed any sweat that you produced.
In today’s language, creams are often referred to as moisturizers. They can be for morning and/or night use. Typically night time moisturizers are thicker /heavier in texture than a daytime moisturizer. Your skin is nourished and nurtured at night based on the product you use.
Daytime creams/moisturizers are typically lighter in texture. Some serums are put in this category because of their creamy texture.
Facial mask. You’ve seen them in an array of colors and consistency. Remember the green clay mask that everyone used to wear? Clay mask are in essence, for oily skin. Therefore, if you have dry skin, you’re stripping the little oil that’s left, out.
So why would you use a mask? Depending on the mask, it can help in deep cleansing your pores and removing dead skin cells. This also helps with fine lines and wrinkles.
If it’s a honey masque, it can bring moisture and hydration to dry and dehydrated skin. However, skin that’s well hydrated and well moisturized makes it easy to apply makeup properly. A honey mask can help with this.
Another thing about mask, is that they can help diminish hyper-pigmentation and even out skin tone and texture.
There are times when becoming your own skin care guru works. Using essential oils to create facial serums or mask come to mind. You’ve read about them and want to try working your own ritual for skin to see how it works.
If this is the case, begin slowly. Essential oils are powerful and when used properly can offer great results to your challenge. An oil cleanse or facial steam will allow you to benefit from chosen essential oils and test the results. Use lavender in small quantity for facial steams and oil cleanse.
