For centuries we’ve been looking for products and ingredients that will soothe, smooth and make our skin look radiant and youthful. Are we always chasing beauty? Maybe not chasing but we’re always trying to enhance what we have.
I worked a trade show recently, The Bronner Bros International Hair Show, and when I tell you some of the most beautiful black women wanted to change “something” about how they looked. Flawless skin and they wanted to make it lighter, a gorgeous head of “natural” hair and they, because there were many of them, wanted to put some kind of texturizer or extra, extra hair on their head. OMG, what happened to liking how you came to the planet!
Between television and magazines you’re being shown images and your subconscious now has you wanting to change the beauty of who you are.
Okay … Wusaaah
Do You Really Want To Change The Way You Look?
Not everyone wants to change their looks but some of you do want to enhance what you’ve got. Two days before we were to set up for the trade show a zit from another planet showed up on my face. That put us three days before the actual show.
It took every ounce of strength I had not to go in and pop it or try to treat it. It was the best decision for that zit. I cleaned my face as usual everyday and stuck to my skin care regimen. On the day of the show I gave myself a Wild Oates and Honey Masque. While this is a hydrating masque it will also enhance the natural glow of your skin. I did not touch the pimple.
The entire show I got compliments about how radiant my skin looked. No one mentioned the zit.
My mother used to always say, “Don’t Make a Mountain Out of a Mole Hill”. When it comes to your skin and its beauty, as long as you’re eating right, drinking your water, exercising and limit your stress, your skin will always have a naturally radiant glow.
Can You Enhance The Natural Beauty of Black Skin?
You can always enhance the natural beauty of your skin. What I mean by enhance is to add steps to your existing black skin care regimen. The basic regimen is to cleanse, tone and moisturize. When adding steps, they would include exfoliation, masque and serums.
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from your skin. Dead skin cells give your skin an ashy, dull, gray look.
Masque can hydrate by adding moisture or remove oiliness depending on your skin’s challenge. Hydrating masque are typically used on dry and/or mature skin. But often when you use products that have a heavy alcohol content, it will strip you skin of its natural oils and cause dryness. So a hydrating masque would work in this case as well.
If your skin is oily, a clay masque would be used to remove some of the oil and bring your skin’s oil level back to a balanced state.
Serums are designed to focus on different challenges to your skin. Skin brightening, anti-aging and acne prevention are challenges that are treated using serums. Serums provide intensive nutrition for the deeper layers of your skin.
Serums are typically oil-and-water-based but they have an oil-free texture allowing the serum to penetrate deep into your skin without leaving a greasy finish. This will allow you to use a moisturizer after its application. You can use a serum alone or your can use it as part of your daily skin care regimen.
Changing the way you look, isn’t really necessary but you can always enhance your natural beauty with the right products and treatments.
