Are you tired of seeing the crack of someone’s behind as you walk down the street or shop in the malls. The image used for this blog post is probably a bit on the extreme side but I had to release.
Yes this is going to be a ranting post. I was out exercising this weekend and decided to walk the mall. Why must I be made privy to your personal parts and why do you wear your bedroom clothes in the street?
I’ve been called ‘ole school’ because I like to see a woman looking like a woman. You are a goddess! It’s from you that life comes forth onto the planet. But somewhere we’ve lost our minds and looking crazy and being disrespected in the process.
Did Your Mother Teach You That Style and Fashion Mattered?
Maybe it wasn’t your mother or your grandmother. Maybe it was your aunt, your neighbor or your English teacher.
Okay, so a lot of you don’t wear white gloves or carry lace trimmed handkerchiefs but it doesn’t mean that you don’t have a since of style.
Where and when did we loose it? Are you afraid of dealing with the inner you in order to reflect the outer you? A great place to begin is to stop looking at the pages of magazines and following ‘everything’ they’re projecting as fashion and style.
Nine out of ten of the clothing pieces you see on the pages of the magazines are not made for your African American body. Your butt’s fuller than most, your hips often more broad, your breast to voluptuous for the clothing that’s sold in stores today.
What happens? You buy these pieces and they don’t enhance your beautiful black curves at all. If you like a piece of clothing, size up so that it falls gracefully over your hips, chest and butt. Don’t be afraid of the word alteration. When you have clothes altered you will have a better fit for your body.
My size 4 niece has hips that are broad and curvaceous and even she has trouble finding clothing pieces to fit her body. So imagine those of us that are even more voluptuous than she and the challenges that we have shopping.
As much as I love shoes, I can’t walk in half the shoes that are sold in stores today and neither can most of you. I’ve seen you and asked a few of you why you decided to purchase a particular shoe. The answer “ it’s the style”
I’ve lived in the “it’s the style” space. With shoes, it has caused me to have some extremely uncomfortable moments. With clothing I remember the ‘mini skirt’ era. I remember having on a skirt so short my Dad told me that if I sneezed, he’d see all of my glory. I was so embarrassed. I felt as though I’d been struck by lightening. As you can see I never forgot his statement.
It made me very much aware of the style of that time in history. It also encouraged me to create my own sense of ‘style’.
If you take anything from the pages of magazines, look at the colors of the season, the fabric selections and the accessories. From what you see, don’t be afraid to make them ‘uniquely you’. The fit of the garment you choose to purchase will determine the type of respect you command from the viewers.
Remember, you can be ‘every woman’ in the body of ‘one woman’ but each has its own ‘personal place’ for expressing who you are.
If you show everything upfront, there’s nothing left for the imagination. So, keep them guessing.
