Antioxidants … now there’s a word that you’ve heard a lot about in the past years and as you mature, it becomes more and more of a buzz word.

In natural black skin care products antioxidants are an integral part of what makes your black skin beautiful.

What do antioxidants do and why all the talk?

Antioxidants work to prevent damage to your body before it actually happens.  They actually protect and nurture your cells naturally, while combating disease and promoting good health.

How can they do that, you ask?  Antioxidants come in many forms including vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

Vitamins and minerals with antioxidant properties are called nutrient antioxidants.  You’ll typically find them in a pill, liquid or powder form.

You look to antioxidants to  protect your cells from free radicals.  What are free radicals?

They are formed naturally in your body but it’s when their production is increased by factors such as sun damage, smoking, stress and toxins like air pollution and asbestos, that you see serious challenges for your skin.

When these factors enter, you’ll see your skin’s natural elasticity, resilience and suppleness decrease, which lead to inflammation and the structural support of your skin, will diminish.

Free radicals are the main culprit of wrinkles and in essence they accelerate your aging process.

Antioxidants can improve your cell function and increase collagen production.  They can also improve elasticity, create healthier, younger skin cells and reduce sun damage.

All of this is great news but it will not happen overnight.  So if you’re of the mindset of looking for a quick fix, forget about it.

Using Antioxidant to Naturally Nourish Black Skin

The more potent the antioxidants used in the foods you eat, the healthier your skin and the better your results.

According to the USDA, when you look at foods like black currants, cherries, cantaloupe, grapes, blueberries, blackberries, peppers and spinach, they are among a growing variety of foods that are found to contain surprisingly high levels of disease-fighting antioxidant compounds.

If you take the grape out of the mix and look and what it has to offer, you’ll be amazed.  Grapes are considered a super fruit, it has an abundance of polyphenols with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

They not only keep blood vessels resilient but also boost your skin and body’s resistance to disease.

The seed and skin of Grapes contain large concentrations of compounds, such as bioflavonoid, that has a positive effect on your health.  And don’t forget resveratrol  that’s found in grapes and it’s said to benefit your skin.

Vitamin E is a high potency antioxidant that helps improve circulation and repair tissue.

Using  Antioxidants Topically to Care for Black Skin

While healthy eating brings a vast amount of antioxidants, only a small percentage of what is consumed actually reaches your skin.

This is where topical products come in to play.  The balance of what you eat and what you apply to your skin can bring beauty to black skin.

Antioxidants for your skin can range from green tea to grape extract. You will even find that Vitamin C is a skin-loving ingredient.

You’ll find antioxidants in everything from facial cleansers to serums and moisturizers to anti-aging creams.

It’s been said: “the more antioxidants you use on your skin, the better”.  I say it depends on your  skin and the condition of your skin as to how much is needed.

How do you keep your black skin beautiful?

Staying away from free radicals like smoking, too much sun, alcohol, toxins and stress will work wonders in helping you keep  your beautiful black skin soft and radiant.
