Black Skin, even skin- got you standing out in the crowd.
All ethnicity have something that makes their skin a little different from the crowd. Black skin is no exception. While our skin is less susceptible to wrinkles and sunburn, we can still be affected by wrinkles and sunburn.
We have to take extra special care not to be lulled into a false sense of security and do everything we can to protect and nourish our skin.
One thing women with darker skin ARE more prone to are dark spots and scars. The melanin in our skin, which helps slow down the aging process, among other things, also leaves us open to scars.
As a Black woman, it’s a fact that at some point in your life, you’ll have dark spots pop up on your skin due to a burn, a scar left over from a pimple or some other agitation.
Dark spots will happen to all of us and it’s only natural we would want to minimize their appearance and make them blend in with our normal skin tone.
This is quite different from using harsh creams and gels, even lasers to lighten your overall skin tone. These treatments can actually leave your skin looking worse, resulting in wrinkles, blood vessel exposure and darker skin – the same thing you were trying to avoid in the first place.
Can You Avoid Getting Dark Spots?
One thing you can do, is try to avoid getting those dark spots to begin with. If you have a pimple, resist the temptation to squeeze it, because doing so can leave permanent scars. Staying out in the sun, especially in the hottest part of the day, can exacerbate existing spots, making them more noticeable.
If you do get a dark spot, try to lighten it naturally by using lemons, potatoes or aloe vera, all of which are high in vitamin C, a great defense against hyper pigmentation.
Regular use of cocoa and/or shea butter can also be soothing to the skin and over time, will help diminish scars.
Remember that the only people with truly “perfect” skin are airbrushed celebrities! All the rest of us can do is take care of our skin so that our skin will take care of us. This allows us put our best face forward.
Black woman you come in so many wonderful shades and hues – caramel, fudge, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, café au lait, pecan, almond – and so much more. Sounds pretty delicious, doesn’t it?
