I once read a statement that said, “Going natural is a 2 step process. Step #1-Going Natural.  Step #2-Staying Natural.”

What happens when you make the decision to remove chemicals that are damaging the structure and follicle of your hair?  These chemicals also bring trauma to your scalp as well as your cellular structure.

Going natural for a lot of women is a great psychological dance because a lot of propaganda has been published in magazines and portrayed on television and the Internet about wearing your hair natural.

So to make the decision to actually show your natural beauty, for some women it provides trauma and stress. Sometimes you’ll hear the expression, “Well maybe natural hair just isn’t for me.”

And what brings that thought into your mind? One of the things that women toy with is that you’ve been told for so long, as women of color who have this natural beauty, that it’s not beautiful.

A lot of women speak out of ignorance and make statements about Natural Hair not being formal enough for high profile events.  Natural foods-good for you, natural products -good for you, natural ingredients-also good for you.   So why can’t natural hair be good for you and any high profile event?

Is Straight Hair “Better”?

We’ve been raised and trained on images of straight hair. Straight hair being better than naturally curly hair, but one of the things we seem to forget is that when we come out of the womb, your hair transitions into it’s natural state.

Yes, your hair might have a moment of straightness but the natural essence of things kicks in and shows you just how connected your spiral is to the universe.

Your hair is a natural spiral and a natural curl. Sometimes this curl is tighter than others for a lot of people, but you don’t come out of the womb with a relaxer in your hair.

You come out the womb with your hair being in its natural state.

Everybody has natural hair, so caring for natural hair should be able to work for anyone. When you look at the type of images that are portrayed, sometimes I hear, “Well what if I don’t feel pretty with my natural hair?”

Why wouldn’t you feel pretty? What lie has been thrown at you so hard until your image of pretty is not an image of you with natural hair?

Does Your Natural Hair Challenge You?

Natural hair, said by some, is just not for everybody. But it IS! When you have challenges with your natural hair, it’s not because it’s natural.

There’s an entire holistic process and essence that’s taking place in your body and that cliché of “You are what you eat” is true. That’s one of the aspects of caring for your natural hair and skin.

Your nutritional program is just as important for the health and beauty of your hair as any topical product that you apply to it in the form of a shampoo or conditioner.

So when you’re looking at hair and it’s health and it’s natural essence, what are you feeding it internally and externally?

When you say to yourself, “I don’t feel pretty or as pretty as I used to when my hair was straight”, that’s a therapy session.

It may be a session with you standing in front of your mirror actually taking a look through a different eye.    Allowing the eyes that are looking from within into the mirror to see this reflection come back at you and show you what true beauty is.

Acceptance of self is, by far, one of the greatest gifts that you can present to yourself.

And when you look into the mirror and accept your natural beauty, you will then be on your way to accepting everything that’s beautiful about you, your hair and your skin.
