Black skin care and air travel. What really happens when you’re 30,000 feet up in the air?
Not only do your inner organs have to adapt to the altitude but your outer most organ- your skin- takes the brunt of all things bad that happen in an airplane.
An airplane cabin is not the ideal environment for optimum health or healthy skin. There are several things that you can do before, during and after your flight that will keep your skin in tip top shape and make your traveling experience more enjoyable.
Dehydration is the number one concern when flying. So how do you slow the process of dehydration when flying? Misting-your-face with water is the best and most immediate way to get moisture to your skin. Get a travel sized plastic bottle and fill it with clean filtered water. If you have a toner in a spray bottle you can use it instead of plain water. Not only will you receive it’s super hydrating benefits, you’ll get the benefit of the ingredients in your toner is well.
Word of caution, if you’re using an astringent that contains alcohol, use the plain filtered water instead.
Exfoliation, here’s my favorite word again, will actually be your best friend before you take a flight. By getting rid of the dead skin cell build up, this will help your skin retain water, which you loose a lot of when you fly.
The fewer dead skin cells that a moisturizer has to penetrate the better it will work and the more hydrated your skin will feel. While exfoliating improves and refines the texture of your skin, it increases the blood circulation to your, face which brings out the natural healthy complexion of your skin. You’ll want to consider exfoliating the day of your flight, getting your skin ready for what’s to come.
If you are on a flight that’s over five hours, you might want to exfoliate in route. If not it’s definitely a good idea to exfoliate at the hotel, after your arrival to your destination. Your skin will benefit from getting all the dirt, debris, and unclean air out of your pores along with minimizing the dry, dead cells on the surface of your skin.
You can also keep your skin hydrated during flight by using a hydrating elixir or light mask under your moisturizer. An elixir might come in the form of an oil or serum, that will not only add moisture to your beautiful black skin but it will act as a humectant, drawing in moisture from the air. Elixirs especially the ones made from oil are best used if you have dry skin. A gel-type mask or glycerin underneath your moisturizer is better for your skin if it’s oily.
When you fly, not only does your skin become dehydrated but you can also suffer from internal dehydration. The best way to keep your insides hydrated is to drink lots of water. If you’re going to have a soda or some alcohol, drink lots of water on your flight. The rule is: two glasses of water for every glass of alcohol.
FYI: Fruit is an excellent source of water. It has natural water. But there’s nothing like the real liquid to quench your thirst.
