Cosmetics for African American women have improved a lot in the last few years, but it is still tricky to find the perfect shade for your tone of skin. And just because the color pallets for eyes, cheeks and lips have improved, doesn’t mean that we’re to wear them all in the same day.

So, finding the correct makeup for your own skin tone can be a bit difficult.  If you select the wrong family of colors, your face may look ashy or your complexion may look flat.

You may want to speak with a makeup specialist or someone at your local cosmetics counter. But before you take their advice, look at their make up and see if you’d want them to give you advice.  Sometimes this can be a scary encounter.  You should always feel free to get a second opinion. Remember that the foundation may look very different on your face than it does in the bottle, so test it on your jaw line to see if it works for you.

Mature women may feel that their skin looks tired, and they may not know how to combat this. A cosmetics specialist or better yet a make up artist, may help you to open up your eyes, to make you feel and look younger. You can use primer, for example, to help prevent creasing of your eye shadow. You might also elect to use a matte eye shadow rather than a frosted one, which will help in diverting attention from those circles you may have under your eyes.

If you are a mature woman of color, don’t be afraid to experiment with various colors that may highlight your more youthful accents. Cosmetics should be more of a fun part of your life. There are a few makeup tips for African American women that will help to bring out your beauty in the most flattering way.

Many women make the mistake of wearing the same type of cosmetics they did when they were younger. You don’t wear the clothes you wore when you were 20 years old (and if you do, maybe it’s time for a makeover).  So you shouldn’t wear makeup you wore when you were 20.  Get good tips from someone at your favorite cosmetics counter, to help your skin look younger, more vibrant and to help you feel better about yourself.

And if you are 20, don’t hide behind makeup trying to make yourself look older or cover up scars or dark spots.  Instead, get on a good skin care regimen and watch your skin begin to glow.

No makeup is going to look good on you if your skin is not in its best condition.  Think of your face as a work of art, if the canvas is flawed, the painting will be as well.  Great skin is the perfect canvas for a great looking face wearing makeup.
