Makeup can do wonders to perk up a dull face but nothing beats basic skin care to keep your face beautiful, even without makeup. For black women, young and old, here are some black skin care tips on how to cleanse your face properly:

  • Use a non-foaming facial cleanser because this is gentle on the skin compared to soaps. It will remove dirt and excess oil from your face without stripping away your skin’s moisture.
  • Wash your face twice a day – once in the morning and at night – but you can cleanse your face up to three times a day if you have oily skin.
  • Always be gentle when washing your face. Facial skin can become irritated easily so use your fingertips when washing and apply light pressure on your face in small circular motions.
  • Wash your face for no more than a minute if you have normal skin and no more than 30 seconds and 90 seconds if you have dry skin and oily skin, respectively.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water and dry your face gently by patting it with a soft, clean towel.

In addition to the above, here are more black skin care tips on what NOT to do when washing your face:

  • If you have oily skin, avoid washing your face with soap. Soaps are harsh on your skin and can dry out your face quickly. This doesn’t mean using it will dry out acne. Excessive skin dryness can only make any acne condition look worse. Use quality non-soap facial cleansers designed to help clear up acne.
  • Never wash your face more than three times a day and even washing that often is only recommended for those with oily skin. If you tend to do the opposite, meaning the day goes by without you washing your face at all, it’s time to change this practice and start a basic black skin care regimen.
  • When exfoliating your face, don’t overdo it. Use a product with gentle exfoliating action and don’t scrub your face. Abrasion will irritate your skin and can lead to discoloration, which black skin is prone to.

With these black skin care tips posted above, you can care for your face properly as you should.

Remember to use facial care products that are not only designed for black skin,  but more importantly, suitable for your particular skin type in order to get real skin benefits.
