green tea facial cleanserDifferent skin types require slightly different skin care. In order to properly care for your skin, you need to choose the right products and techniques that work best for your specific skin care needs.  In addition, caring for African American skin involves the following steps:

1. Cleanse.

In order to achieve radiant black skin, a good facial cleanser is recommended twice a day, in the morning and at night right before bedtime. Always use a facial cleanser that is formulated for your skin type. If you have dry skin, use a cleanser that also moisturizes your skin and stay away from oil-free cleansers if you have oily skin. You can use warm water to cleanse your face.  Why warm water?  Because hot water will dry  your skin out.

2. Moisturize.

Our skin, just like the rest of our body, is in constant need of hydration. If you don’t moisturize your skin, the daily exposure to sun and other harsh elements will leave it dry and susceptible to damage, resulting in premature skin aging and lack of elasticity. For African Americans, dry skin usually leaves the complexion with a grayish or ashen appearance. Hydrate your skin daily with a good moisturizer, making sure to use water based product if you have oily skin

3. Exfoliate.

This is an important step to any skin care regimen but is especially beneficial when caring for African American skin , particularly with oily skin. Exfoliating simply means removing the dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin, which is necessary to allow new skin to surface.  Exfoliating helps get rid of discolorations and even out blotchy skin tone. Use a gentle exfoliating product for everyday use and a mask and/or scrub once a week.

4. Protect.

Most African Americans don’t think they are in danger of sun damage. However, regardless of the fact that dark skin has a high amount of melanin, prolonged sun exposure will still wreak havoc on dark skin without adequate sun protection. Wear wide-brim hats and sunglasses when going out in midday and, more importantly, wear a high-quality sunscreen everyday.

5. Nourish.

Beautiful black skin is healthy skin that is nourished from the inside. Your diet and lifestyle contribute largely to the condition of your skin. Of course, eating right and exercising regularly have positive effects on your skin. Taking care of your skin outside as well as inside is the secret to complete African American skin care.
