Wellness is changing beauty for African Americans! You’ve heard the term for years. No longer associated with just spas and retreats, Wellness has evolved into a reality that’s part of your daily lives and beauty regimen. Not just in natural and organic choices in food, but in the choice of fabrics of the clothes you buy and the environments you live in.
Clean Beauty – Clean beauty focuses on natural and organic ingredients as well as non-toxic formulations. Indie beauty makers are on the cutting edge of clean beauty and seeing to it that the industry adheres to it. Essential oils are being used in serums for everything from moisturizers to acne care.
Herbs and flowers are being infused in vegetable oils and filtered waters for beauty treatments and hair conditioners. The thing about it, you’ve been seeing this done for years. When funds are tight, you become extremely creative. This is how small businesses are born from kitchen tables. It was out of necessity and more often than not, it was natural and organic.
Nutrition From Within – Rising health cost and the onslaught of chronic diseases is causing us as African Americans to take a closer look at our lifestyle habits and behaviors. We’re reading labels on the back of packages, actually studying the ingredients. With all the allergies and toxic reactions to foods, it’s important to understand what we’re about to consume.
When you turn inward for black skin care, you get those of us that are focused on Wellness from a nutritional point of view. Women of color are turning their mindset towards internal health as oppose to how well they want to look in a garment. Don’t get me wrong, the way that dress hugs your curves is still important. You’ve just placed your health first. When you take the beauty from within approach, your food choices will actually help with internal cleansing that leads to external beauty.
Everything from nuts, to plant based beauty, to vitamins and other supplements for internal aids are making their way into your kitchen.
Mindfulness – How do you address anxiety and depression? Meditation, yoga, Tai chi and a long slow walk can help ease the overwhelming stress and anxiety you experience on a daily basis. One of the key factors in mindfulness is getting enough sleep. When you sleep deprived, this puts you in true Zombie state. If I don’t get my sleep, I’m snapping at people and not even aware of my actions.
I’ve learned that I might as well take a nap when I’m tired. You might want to try it. Whatever you’re doing will possibly suffer and need to be redone once your thinking is clear anyway.
Heart apps to monitor how close you get to your 10,000 a day steps are now at your fingertips on your cell phones. Watches that count your calories, steps and your pace on the treadmill are at your disposal also. Technology is providing you with opportunities to be relaxed and charming. Use it!
That’s it for this week. As always …
