There’s been a lot of talk about anti aging over the years, now the beauty industry is asking that you rethink that phrase. For the most part, as women of color, you’ve not had to concern yourself with a lot of wrinkles and sunburned skin. Your challenges have been more along the line of discoloration and dark spots.
I must admit I’m getting more calls from women that are concerned with how their skin looks as they mature. A lot of your challenges are brought on by the wrong product use and the foods you eat.
The biggest culprit is in how you feel and what think of your skin. You look in the mirror and what do you say to yourself on a daily basis? Do you tell yourself how beautiful you are? If we can talk to plants and get results, you can use the same kindness when looking at yourself in the mirror.
Your thoughts set up a chemical reaction in your body. Whether you think young or old about your skin, it will reflect your thoughts about it. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have your skin care regimen in place. Your regimen is part of the external care you give to yourself. The simpler your regimen the better.
The 3 Step Regimen for Maturing Skin.
Cleanse – use a gentle cleanser for your skin. Green tea as an ingredient is great for your chocolate skin. It fights sun damage and kills bacteria that destroys your skin. When you start young using gentle cleansers, they help nourish your skin as you mature.
Toners help bring your skins pH back into balance. They prepare your skin to receive moisturizers or serums.
Moisturizers are designed to hydrate, smooth and soften your skin. The key is in learning how much to use. Some of you will need more in the morning and less at night, for others it will be the opposite. And yes, oily skin can use moisturizers, they will just be oil-free.
That’s it! A basic skin care regimen will help you keep your skin radiant, soft and glowing as you mature.
Since newer skin cells come every 38-40 days as you mature, as opposed to 28-30 days, you might see some dead skin cell buildup. This is when you’d introduce an exfoliating treatment. Every 10 days will work. Nothing harsh like nut shells though.
The better you eat and the more water you drink, the better your skin will look. The health and beauty of your skin begins from within.
As with everything on this planet, we’re expected to mature as humans. What does that mean? It’s simple: Stop trying to be and look 25 if you’re 45, 50 or 60. God forbid you’re 70 or older and people want to put you out to pasture. Remember the saying: “ Age ain’t nuth’in but a number?” It’s true! Yes the pace of your walk may get a bit slower, so you develop a stroll. Whether you know it or not, when you stop rushing, it allows you to enjoy your surroundings.
Fall in love with your skin, especially as you mature. Love what you see in the mirror. Other people don’t go to the beach and tanning beds trying to look like you for nothing. They admire your beauty, they just won’t tell you.
That’s it for this week. As always …
